How it works

Lookups use DB-IP's free Lite databases (IP Geolocation by DB-IP, CC BY 4.0), kept on this site's own server and updated monthly. A location is the database's best guess, usually right on the country and often off on the city; for networks that move around, like anycast or mobile carriers, it's where the owner registered the block. Hostnames are resolved here, up to eight addresses. Each address's reverse name (PTR) is looked up and then resolved again to see that it points back, as mail servers check; those DNS queries are the only thing that leaves the server.
